Some more about Stars

In previous articles I have written about patterns amongst the stars that define the seasons, but now I need to dispel a particular myth.  For centuries poets and artists have referred to the stars as unchanging, feeling that something at least is constant and steady in the in the rush and bustle of the human world, but they could not be more wrong. The patterns that we know as constellations are not permanent, the stars move in their own paths and the patterns will not persist.

The lower versions of the Plough (Ursa Major) show, on the left how it looked 100,000 years ago and on the right how it will look 100,000 years in the future.

There is of course much more to be said. The stars themselves are not permanent, they are born, change throughout their lives in colour, size, temperature and constitution. Finally they die, though the length of their lives depends on how big they were at birth. The Sun for example, has been shining for about 4,500 million years and will continue for at least another 5,000 million years before losing its outer shell and slowly fading away.     Bill Barlow
