Visit to Trebah

On Monday July 14 a group of Friends gathered at Trebah Gardens for a visit, which was personally guided by Major Tony Hibbert on behalf of the Trebah Trust. The Trust itself was founded by the Hibberts in the 1980s after they had begun the resurrection of the garden from the dereliction of the previous fifty years.

The Hibberts retired here in 1981 after a distinguished war and city career and were seeking a quiet life, but they were soon persuaded of the need for restoration of the garden and indeed the possibilities of its becoming of Cornwall’s “Great Gardens”.

We were limited to a party of sixteen but eventually seventeen of us enjoyed a magical walk around what has been described as both a ‘magnificent’ and ‘wild’ Cornish ravine garden.

Starting from the House via the Lawn Path we paused to enjoy the view down the valley to the beach and the Helford River with the rolling canopy of giant sixty-foot rhododendrons framed on either side by curtains of trees climbing the banks of the ravine.

The twenty-five acres were described in detail by Major Hibbert, happy to answer our queries so that we were enchanted by every aspect of this glorious garden.

Back to the impressive coffee shop for refreshments (thanks to our host) and departure, having been uplifted and inspired by this paradise which is here on our doorsteps.

There is an extensive collection of lifeboat and shipwreck artefacts and a miniature bottle collection.

A selection of hot and cold meals is served lunchtimes and evenings throughout the year.  In summer there is a small garden and in winter a welcoming fire burns.  Large carpark.
