Trevarno Estate Gardens

& the National Museum of Gardening:

We have arranged this visit to coincide with the anticipated peak of the bluebells season.  The following extracts from Trevarno’s publicity material also give a flavour of what can be seen.

"A rare and very special part of Cornwall with a fascinating history stretching back to 1246 when Randolphus de Trevarno first gave the Estate its name. Privately owned since then by a succession of notable families, the magnificent gardens and grounds have been developed and extended over the centuries to become what many have described as one of the finest in a county renowned for its great gardening tradition.  Now open throughout the year for the first time in 750 years, the enchanting combination of mature woodland landscapes with formal areas and many inspired garden features creates a magical and memorable experience which will be enjoyed by all age groups.

Acknowledged as a remarkable celebration of Britain’s glorious gardening heritage, the National Museum of Gardening is the culmination of six years planning and research. From Spring 2001, the Museum has been housed in a new purpose-designed building and features the country’s largest and most comprehensive collection of gardening antiques, implements, memorabilia and ephemera, creatively displayed in ten themed areas.

Recreational, commercial and non-gardeners, young and old alike, will be fascinated by the variety, ingenuity and, in some cases, hilarity of the exhibits and artefacts, many of which are now extremely rare.

See the development of a unique range of Handmade Craft Workshops at Trevarno, each sharing a common ethos of using materials from the Estate, or being influenced and inspired by the garden and grounds. These include a Handmade Soap Workshop which produces the purest skin care soaps, using only plant materials. An Organic Herbal Workshop, the first in Britain to be accredited by the Organic Farmers & Growers Association. A Bee Centre, a Handmade Copper Water Feature Workshop using recycled materials, The Trevarno Furniture Maker and Trevarno Potter.
